Member Profile Minimize

Name: Virginia Halligan

Town: Bridgton, Maine

Instruments: Flute and piccolo

Virginia “Ginny” Halligan began playing the flute in elementary school but stopped after high school and didn’t play again until twenty-five years later when she picked up her daughter’s flute. She joined the Bridgton Community Band in 1987 and also plays in the Westbrook City Band and the Flutations, a flute trio/quartet.

A substitute teacher and executive secretary, Ginny is a member of the garden club, the Red Hatters and her church choir. She also enjoys golf and spending time with her family.

Ginny finds playing in the Bridgton Community Band to always be a learning experience. She loves the camaraderie and hates having to miss any band rehearsals or concerts.

Her favorite parade performances outside Bridgton are in the Yarmouth Clam Festival parade and the Fryeburg Fair parade. The flat tire on the trailer at the Yarmouth parade one year was her most memorable band experience.

Ginny writes:

“Bridgton, Maine is very similar to my hometown of Tipton, Iowa in size (population), schools and businesses. It personifies the old-fashioned Americana of the mid-century (1900s) by having a community band for musicians to play (even into their nineties!) and spectators to listen and reminisce. Keep it going!!”
